Six Years Ago.

Facebook gave me a notification today that exactly six years ago, I had ostomy surgery.  It also brought up a post I put up the early morning of surgery day.  As you could imagine, I was having a hard time sleeping the night before everything would change for me.  Here’s some of what I wrote:

Restart

At the end of 2011, my oncologist had declared I was in remission.  Shortly afterwards, my brother and his girlfriend came to visit.  He had been down to visit several times while I was sick.  He spent a lot of time in the hospital with me along with his girlfriend and Danielle. At the visit after I

The CDC and Ostomies

I’ve tried writing this post a few times now.  The CDC has put out new anti-smoking ads.  These ads have always been kind of in your face and shocking.  The most recent tie together the increased risk of colon cancer and smoking.  There’s this one: and this one: Many people with ostomies were offended by

The Ornamental Ass

It’s been over two years since I’ve been declared “cancer free” and to tell you the truth, I don’t think about cancer much anymore.  I talk about it from time to time with other cancer survivors, but aside from the checkups now happening twice a year, it doesn’t occupy much time in my mind. Now

My Love / Hate Relationship With Food.

I’m feeling sick this morning.  It’s not surprising because I’m on vacation and haven’t been eating well.  I’m eating much better than I ever did before cancer, but worse than I normally do these days. I have this difficult relationship with food.  I love to eat, but now I get feedback pretty quickly that I’ve

Ostomy Uncovered

Every once in a while somebody will get the courage up to ask me questions about my colostomy bag.  It seems like quite the taboo subject and to be honest, if I didn’t have one I think I would feel awkward talking about it.  Funny thing is now that I have one I am

Two Years With the Ostomy

I was changing my colostomy bag yesterday and it occurred to me how routine it has all become. It’s hard to believe I had my ostomy surgery back in March of 2011.  It doesn’t seem that long ago.  Here we are in 2013 and things have really been ‘normal’. I’ve been living this way for two years

American Idol and the Ostomy

February and March were busy months for me at work.  It was busy for everybody because American Idol had come to our theatre to shoot six episodes this season.  They were shooting in between our normal show schedule which meant that we would do ten shows in a week and then load in American Idol

A Peek Inside

So the time has come for another colonosocopy.  A real look inside my insides if you like.  It’s one of those tests that I think most people dread.  For the most part you wouldn’t need to do it until you hit 50 years old, but in my case I will probably have one yearly for

Have Stoma, Will Travel.

It’s been a long time since I’ve been out of Las Vegas. The last time I travelled was a quick in and out of New York City for a visit to Sloan Kettering Cancer Center for a second opinion regarding the need to have ostomy surgery. This is the first time in a long time
